About Eureka Gilkey

I work with leaders and institutions in the moments that decide everything: growth, crisis, capital, transition.

Twenty-eight years taught me the same thing over and over. Hope without resources is fragile. Money without trust is transactional. And love without institutional discipline rarely outlasts the moment.

Most strategy fails not because the thinking was wrong but because nothing was built to carry it. The plan is finished, the room empties, and within a year the work has quietly returned to what it was. So I frame a problem precisely enough that the people who have to move can see themselves inside the answer, and then I build the structure that holds after I leave.

I have done this as a chief executive with full board accountability, as a Senior Executive Service appointee at HUD, as the person who built the national political department for Obama ‘08, and as the one who had to make a $9.7 million goal real. Over eight years in Houston’s Third Ward I grew an institution’s revenue 219 percent, took it from four employees to thirty, closed that campaign above goal in twenty months, and helped convene an anti-displacement coalition that operates today under its own board.

The coalition is the one I measure by. The most meaningful thing a leader leaves behind is not a title or a plan. It is something that keeps working without them.
